Detecting sneaker males
In corkwing wrasse, males and females are usually quite different, but some males take on the colors and patterns of the female. Most males spend their efforts on building nests, attracting females, and watching over the eggs, and they jealously guard the nests, in particular against other males. In contrast, the sneaker males tries to dart into the middle of a spawning, and fertilize some of the eggs. Sneaker males are almost impossible to distinguish from females, but it turns out a neural network is able to.
